Whenever we talk about cars we end up fighting about it. She puts no stock in what I have to say because I have next to no Real world experience driving or working on cars, I research this stuff for fun, I know my stuff. But she is dating a guy (yes same guy that went off on an antisemitic rant about the holocaust) who works as a car washer at a local Audi Dealership. He once told me that He got to drive an "Audi RS8 Sports Sedan with a turbo V12", He showed me a picture of it, It was a Audi S8 with a V8. Then she defended his verbal ferfuffle by saying "I dont care what Kind of "V" it has", lol that remark just made me laugh. She puts more stock in what he has to say than anybody else, even though he has admitted to me that, and I quote "I dont know much about cars". The thing is she doesnt know cars at all either. It bugs me that she speaks from his mouth with no opinions of her own. And she says I am wrong because her boyfriend works on cars and he said otherwise. How do I go about talking with her about cars, if she keeps on talking out of her boyfriend's ass?

If she can't be bothered to listen to anyone but her boyfriend who seems to be a bit of a dumbass, she doesn't need to be someone you have discussions on certain things with. Especially cars, since he's totally fucking clueless it seems.

You have to pick your battles man. In her eyes her boyfriend is right about everything and you are just trying to argue. Real actual facts mean nothing in a situation like this. There's no need to correct her because while in your mind you are simply offering correct and useful knowledge but in her mind your being a dick whose sole purpose is to discredit her boyfriend who everyone knows you're not particularly fond of. If you continue to insist that you need her as a friend (from what you've described she's not a very good one) you just have to ignore that stuff.

Simple, dont. Stoop to her level of knowledge, and make comments on color, appearance, and thats all. Leave the technical stuff to someone else.

Just my $0.02: Guy goes off on an antisemitic rant, involving the holocaust even (Who does that? Sophomoric at best.), and she willingly still hangs out with him? His automotive ignorance is the least of the concerns there. The saying, "Can't shake the devil's hand and say you're only kidding" comes to mind. Ditch 'em both. You're too smart and nice a guy to have to clean up their crap.

Don't. Change the subject or smile and nod and say 'that's interesting' and then change the subject. To talk to her about cars would be lost as you aren't in fact talking to her about cars she is merely telling you your wrong and she's merely repeating what someone else is saying.

Plus, avoid arguing with a woman at all costs. Save the arguments for when it's important (and your likely to win). Because no matter who started it or how it ends, you will be the bad guy so bite your tongue.

I wish people would give me some credit. But I guess in her eyes, If you get payed to do anything regarding cars, you are immediately an expert. He's just car washer, He never graduated high school, He isnt a mechanic and He doesnt even change his own oil. I would never put any stock in what he has to say

Find his car/open hood/take off 2 plug wires/when he says it runs like shit tell him to see if the spark plug wires are all on/repeat this with different things.

In situations like these, when I want to be a mildly-dickish-car-snob and prove my knowledge to the less-than-knowledgable, I'll stay interested and ask more and more detailed questions until they don't even know what I'm asking. This makes you sound interested in their knowledge of a given car, but you clearly know more about them once you start asking questions about things they don't even know about.

"Audi RS8 Sports Sedan with a turbo V12" you say?

"Sweet! What was the displacement of the RS8's v12?"

"Does Audi mount those engine laterally or longitudinally in the RS8?"

(my favorite after the inevitable "not sure")

Ah, I missed that post originally! Funny everybody thought of it. Super busy on the job search, as well as trying to get things done that I've been putting off. Car stuff, house stuff, bike stuff. In fact, need to go get a new cable modem. Re-wired our home network on Tuesday and the old one is older than I thought (like, 12 or 13 years) and is about to be EOL'd standards-wise. Hope to have some more to post soon; any and all wishes of good luck are appreciated!

Ive been researching cars since I could read. Different models, brands, US cars, Non-US cars, New Cars, Old cars, Engines, Brakes, Suspensions, etc... I got a book of car cutaways for my 8th birthday and I read it every day, I was fascinated by it.

I was the same way. I worked 3 summers as a basic mechanic in college, but before that I had never worked on a car in any way. I still knew every make and model and engine and hp/tq figure there was. Im just saying, dont knock him cuz hes a car washer and not a mechanic. Lots of people arent mechanics and they still know their stuff.

He doesnt know anything about cars, He drives a Honda EG hatch because he wants people to think he's cool. Its plastidipped, he wants to lower it (even though its already lowered), it has a removable steering wheel and he wants to put on a fartcan. He thinks hes cool. Oh, and hes gonna take it to a shop to do it, talk about a waste of money.

Haven't read the other comments yet, but I imagine they reflect what I'm about to say; she sounds like a pretty useless friend, and he sounds like a huge fucking tool. If he's going to be that way, and she's going to back him up, while offending you in the process, she's not a good friend. Just let them be how they're going to be, don't let them drag you down.
